Jim Colleran has been making theatre happen for four decades. On and off stage, he has worked in nearly every aspect of theater – from acting, directing and coaching to writing, composing and editing.
Jim currently serves as Director of Marketing for Concord Theatricals, the world’s most significant theatrical company, comprising the catalogs of R&H Theatricals, Samuel French, Tams-Witmark and The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection. Concord Theatricals is the only firm providing truly comprehensive services to the creators and producers of plays and musicals, including theatrical licensing, music publishing, script publishing, cast recording and first-class production.
As Director of Marketing, Jim happily combines two of his favorite things: live theater and the written word. He oversees all editorial content for Concord Theatricals' websites, including ConcordTheatricals.com and ConcordTheatricals.co.uk. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of RodgersandHammerstein.com, MarvinHamlisch.com and Concord Theatricals' online magazine, Breaking Character.
Jim’s writing can be found in the liner notes of two GRAMMY-winning albums: the 2022 Broadway Revival Cast Recording of Into the Woods (2023 GRAMMY Winner, Best Musical Theater Album) and the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Some Like It Hot (2024 GRAMMY Winner, Best Musical Theater Album).
From 2004 to 2013, Jim served as Resident Musical Director for TADA! Youth Theater, where he created dozens of original musicals and oversaw music for nearly 30 main stage shows. For TADA! Jim wrote book, music, and lyrics to The Gumball Gang: Crime-Solving Kids (Winner, 2007 National Youth Theater Award) and composed songs for every show in the Everything About… series. As a teaching artist, he has written scores of songs for numerous productions in schools throughout New York City.
Jim is an alumnus of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, where in 2006 he was awarded the prestigious Jerry Harrington Musical Theatre Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement. He is also a proud member of the Dramatists Guild.
Jim wrote the book, music, and lyrics to several original musicals, including Alienne (2014 New York Fringe Festival); Still Life at the Golden Age, Go Girls Go!, and Hoarder Patrol (The York Theatre); and Swampelot and My Little Martian (New Jersey's Allegro Theater). Music/Lyrics: It's A Wonderful Life, Medea, You Don't Know Jac! and over 200 children’s shows at Kidstock Creative Theater in Winchester, MA, including shows with titles like Planet of the Grapes, Swan Cake and Jurassic Pork. For the Summer Musical Theatre Workshop program at the Kaufman Music Center in Manhattan, Jim wrote music and lyrics to two original shows, The Little Lemonade Girl and Stinky Sneakers, both with book and direction by Ben Tostado. Jim also wrote the opening/closing number for Put It On! and Bravissimo!
In 2016/17, Jim had the distinct honor of writing an original musical for CO/LAB Theater Group, a non-profit organization offering individuals with developmental disabilities a creative and social outlet through theater arts. The show, co-conceived and written with the actors, was entitled My Way Or The Subway.
Other music director credits include A Charlie Brown Christmas and Godspell (SOOP Theatre; director, Paul Romanello), The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere (Theatreworks USA; director, Jeremy Dobrish), Falsettos (Fire Island Pines Arts Project; director, Joe Barros) and the reading/workshop of the new musical Single Girl Sitcom (book/music/lyrics by Doug Friedman).
Jim has performed and/or composed for The Paper Bag Players, The Charles Busch Revue and The Irish Arts Center. He spent several years touring the country in The Slim Goodbody Show and in his original one-man musical assembly, Gentleman Jim.
At the piano, Jim has performed at every major cabaret venue in NYC, from Town Hall to Sardi’s. He has had the pleasure of accompanying a multitude of talented singer/actors, including Charles Busch, Alison Fraser, Julie Halston, Malachy McCourt, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Michael Rupert and Peter Scolari.
